Bingham Healthcare is pleased to introduce Stephen M. Hansen, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spine surgery, having completed a spine surgery fellowship.

Dr. Hansen brings unique skillsets to Idaho. He performs endoscopic spine surgeries. With this technique, he is able to perform outpatient spine surgery through a single incision that is only a centimeter long, the least invasive technique for any spine surgery. Many patients have traveled to Arizona or Florida to the Laser Spine Institute for these same surgeries, paying thousands of dollars out of pocket, but Dr. Hansen performs them locally and bills insurance to minimize his patients’ out–of-pocket expenses.

Dr. Hansen is also one of only a few spine surgeons in Idaho who routinely perform disc replacements, an alternative to fusion that preserves and even improves spine motion. In addition to these cutting edge surgeries, Dr. Hansen performs routine spine surgeries as well, including discectomies and fusions in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spines.

Dr. Hansen is a conservative surgeon who also provides his patients with the same nonsurgical interventions that pain doctors perform. He routinely does epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablations, vertebroplasties, and kyphoplasties for patients who need them. He also can offer his patients spinal cord stimulators and other minor procedures to treat all varieties of neck and back pathologies.

When Dr. Hansen has free time, he likes to spend it in the outdoors with family and friends. He enjoys triathlons, fishing, hunting, backpacking, skiing, and other outdoor adventures. He also enjoys playing the piano. He started a not-for-profit organization to benefit Haitians, and he frequently goes on medical trips to Haiti to provide service to impoverished Haitians and to teach his skills to other orthopedic providers in Haiti. His wife Emily is from Shoshone, Idaho, and he has four sons, a daughter-in-law, and a grandson.

Dr. Hansen speaks Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole.
